Maol Chean-dearg is an isolated munro located on the north western side of Glen Carron and can be combined with An Ruadh-stac an isolated corbett to give a more interesting and varied days walking in this remote area.
The day will start from the parking at Coulags, here we will walk north along the eastern side of Fionn-abhainn until it is possible to cross over just before the bothy. We continue north towards Coire Fionnaraich until we reach a path leading us west to Bealach a’Choire Ghairbh. From the bealach we will climb steeply over loose rock to the summit of Maol Chean-dearg a munro with fantastic views towards Loch an Eoin.
We will descend from Maol Chean-dearg back to the bealach, from here it is now possible to gain the steep west facing ridge of An Ruadh-stac. We climb this steep rocky ridge to the summit of An Ruadh-stac.
Descent will be by the way we ascended, this will return us back to the bealach, here we will gain the footpath that will lead us back to Coulags.
