Scrambling

Scrambling lies somewhere between hill walking and climbing, you’ll need to get your hands dirty in order to stay safe and make upward progression. However, other than a sure foot and a head for heights there is nothing to stop you taking part in a truly breath-taking and exhilarating experience. Scrambling can take you off the beaten track in no time at-all to the wildest of situations with some of the best views on offer in the mountains.

Navigation

Aspect Mountaineering is pleased to be able to offer you courses certified by the National Navigation Award Scheme. The overall aim of the courses are simple – to give lovers of the outdoors, whatever their sport, age or fitness, the freedom to explore the paths, trails, hills and mountains of Britain and abroad. Gaining an award does not give you a qualification to teach or lead. It is a recognition of the level of skill at which you can navigate.

Hill Walking

Hill walking in all its guises is to be enjoyed and cherished. Rugged Mountain tops with rocky, knife edge ridges, rolling hills with panoramic vistas, cliff top coastal paths with views across the ocean to gentle strolls through high mountain glens full of flowers and fauna. We love it all here at Aspect Mountaineering and are happy to offer wide and varied routes to be enjoyed by all. John Muir put it best when he said: “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”

Another quick hit at Auchinstarry Quarry during the Easter break, 6th April 2024. This time with Lesley & Suzie, Lesley has climbed in the past and wants to get back into it. Suzie is a personnel trainer and wanted to try something different. 👍
Both ladies smashed out a good haul of routes including: Mister, Ye Can Walk Up Roon the Back S, Access Route D, Scream S, Whimper S and Anarchist VD. A top effort! 🧗‍♀️
A huge thank to Lesley & Suzie for coming along and embracing the experience and a huge thank you to Colin & Euan that came along to shadow. 😀

7th April 2024, another throw back to the Easter break, taking advantage of a brief weather window at a cold and very blustery Neilston Quarry with Lexi & Em's.
It was a short session, with the main focus being on keeping the girls moving to prevent them getting cold ✅️, reinforcing skills they already have learned ✅️ and checking their retention ✅️.
A huge thank you to Police Scotland MRT who were at the crag training, they very kindly took the time to answer the girls questions, and not only that, the girls got to name the very accident prone "Jeff" a training manikin that needed to be rescued numerous times. 😀
Aspect Mountaineering offers long term coaching, contact us for further details‼️

I met Isaac & Harrison back in March, at a very chilly Neilston Quarry. Since then I have been coaching this super energetic and competitive duo at Above Adventure twice a week. 😀
The main focus of the sessions has been getting the boys to slow down and enjoy their climbing. We have been playing lots of traversing games, with different challenges. Such as matching feet on the same hold, ninja 🥷 feet or silent feet and climbing with no hands on holds, but they can use hands on the wall (palming) for balance. 👍
We have also been focusing on some of the hard skills, such as tying in, setting up the belay device, safety checks before climbing and communication skills. And lots of climbing. 🧗‍♀️
A huge thank you to both parents for allowing me to share the photos of this super energetic duo.

More from the Easter holidays, 5th April 2024. Making the most of an incredibly cold 🥶 and rainy 🌧 day with a visit to the Mighty EICA Ratho 💪 with Lexi & Em's. This was the first time the girls have travelled to another climbing centre, we usually climb at Above Adventure in Kilmarnock (see previous posts). 😀
It is important for young climbers/climbers to experience different climbing centres. Why? By visiting other centres you get to try different heights of wall, different angles of wall, different textures of wall, different hand holds, different styles of route setting, you get to meet different climbers, different coaches and a different atmosphere. All these things and many more help you to develop your climbing indoors and outdoors. 👍
Lexi is now leading 6a-6a+ at her local wall, to compensate for the height of Ratho we had to drop a grade 4+-5+. Ratho is three times higher than the wall Lexi usually climbs on. Lexi did find the height intimidating, but once we talked things through, Lexi realised and understood she could use the intermediate lower offs if she wanted to. We were off, Lexi lead straight to the top of the massive slab on her first lead in Ratho. 🧗‍♀️
Em's climbing is progressing as well, Em's is now climbing routes clean on bottom rope & auto-belay, by sticking to one colour and is climbing grades 5+-6a. One of my main focusses with Em's is getting her to use her feet and to stop pulling on the holds. I have been using lots of simple drills, such as hand-hovers. Em's needs to put her hand above the hold she wants to use and count to three before she can use it. The difference in her climbing from when I first met her to now is incredible. 🧗‍♀️
All in all, another totally awesome session with these two mini mountaineers. A massive thank you to the staff at Ratho, we really felt welcome. As always, thanks to Mum for allowing me to share the photographs. 😀
Aspect Mountaineering offers long-term coaching for both young people and adults, contact us for further information‼️

More from the Easter break, 12th April 2024 and a morning/afternoon at Bennybeg. Shower 🌧 dodging and making the most of the sunny 🌞 spells. Sophie & She were visiting friends in Glasgow and whilst here in Scotland they wanted to make the most of their visit and try rock climbing. 🧗‍♀️
We spent the day at Sector 2 of Bennybeg, and both Sophie & She made successful ascents of: New Beginning 5*, Beguile 5**, The Spanner 5*, Benny's Black Streak 5+**, Ally's in Wonderland 3+***, The Beg Issue 4* and finished with The Beggar 6a***. 💪 An impressive haul routes and a really enjoyable session with this very capable duo. 😀
